Top Things To Check Before Driving Long Journeys

With any long journey, it’s important to make sure your car is fully checked and is in a safe and stable condition before you set off. Having a breakdown midway on your journey is the last thing you want, so Ken’s Auto’s have put together the top seven steps to take to ensure your car is in tip top condition before you leave.

1. Fuel

With all long journeys, the first step you take is to check that you have enough petrol to make it to your destination. Carry some spare fuel in your boot if you think you may need it.

2. Tyres

By law, your tyre tread needs to be above 1.6mm thick in order to be safe and legal to drive on the road. Check the sides of each tyre to make sure there is no damage and no repairs are required.

3. Lights

Your car needs to meet the legal requirement that all your lights are working and are not blocking any light. Make sure you check each light is working, especially if you are making long journeys at night.

4. Water

Check the level of your water coolant and ensure there is enough to keep your car cool during any long journeys.

5. Screenwash

Top up your screenwash level if necessary, as this will help you to clear your windscreen if any dirt, bugs or rain drops smear your screen and distort your view. Use a screenwash with anti-freeze to avoid frost and snow building up.

6. Oil

Oil keeps your engine cool and well lubricated; it prevents it welding together during long journeys. So make sure there is enough oil in your car before you leave or it could result in a costly repair.

7. Windscreen Wipers

Check your windscreen wipers are still sharp and intact, as driving with damaged wipers can cause smears during wet weather, resulting in dangerous driving.
