Safety Tips for Driving on Ice

Winter is one of the worst times of the year when it comes to driving on ice, as conditions are much more dangerous than normal and the amount of traffic increases. England is notorious for bad weather, so it’s important to be vigilant whilst driving in these bad conditions.

How to Prepare?

First of all, you need to consider if the conditions are safe enough to make the journey. Is it really necessary? If the snow and ice are exceptionally bad then the best advice is to stay home.

Ensure you have the appropriate kit stocked in your car in case of a breakdown or emergency. Always check you have a warm blanket, a rope to tow your car, a lighter in case your car locks freeze, and a working torch in case you break down during the evening. Never set off without a charged phone and mobile car charger so you are always able to make emergency calls if required.

Make sure you double check your tyres as driving on ice drastically decreases your grip. Your tyre tread should meet the legal requirements of 1.6mm thick, which is at least three-quarters of the circumference of the tyre.

How to Drive on Ice?

Driving on ice increases your chances of skidding, so ensure your driving movements are smoother. Brake slower, accelerate slower and turn gently and your tyre grip will improve and reduce your chances of sliding into the back of someone’s car.

Always increase the space between you and the car in front to avoid any accidental skids. Braking time when driving on ice doubles, so you need to allow for space and time to do so.

Try to drive in a higher gear as this will reduce tyre spin which will stop you from moving off as the tyres do not have sufficient grip.

If you do experience a skid, remember not to brake and to turn into the skid and your car will begin to level out.
